no beavers?!

We watched the CPAWS video today about Manitoba Lowlands. There were no beavers. There were lots of trees though. And water. And ungulates. I'm excited about this park. It's pretty and contains the best example of Karst geology and Marl lakes ever.

Yep. Manitoba Lowlands National Park. It's being made into a National reserve at the moment (ie- it's being set aside) and then it'll be made into a park. Because the surrounding communities (mostly Indigenous) still rely on some of its resources, like moose, fish, trees Parks has to work with them to make sure that they can still use some of the resources and that they're sustainable. Parks also wants to make sure that the cultural history of the Grand Rapids people is being presented properly and that elders from the surroundings communities are being consulted.

This makes ML very different from other older parks, where Indigenous communities were uprooted and moved. Not exactly the best way to promote stewardship and goodwill.
